POEM: A Red Dress by John Bowie

A hangover from school to college,
the lies they told,
the lack of confidence and self depreciation
leading him to believe them,
then
and now
‘Man you not popped your cherry yet?
I lost mine when I was born.'
(this guy really hadn’t thought it through)
still he berated on him

Relentless

He said: 'Take the fifty,
take a walk.'
'In the car park' and he pointed
'...there’s a girl,'
'she’ll take a fuck, make you a real man.'
He took the notes

He handed it away, clean, guilt free;
took nothing from her
(And she gave him respect)

More of a man than they’d ever be...
so it began:
journey into real (man)

Whatever that is
